Richard Carapaz attempts late attack in Vuelta a España stage 19

Richard Carapaz attempted to disrupt the general classification standings during stage 19 of the 2026 Vuelta a España. The Ecuadorian rider, competing for EF Education-EasyPost, launched an attack from the favorites group with over 80 kilometers remaining. Supported by teammate Darren Rafferty, Carapaz briefly built a 20-second lead, but the move was neutralized by the podium contenders, including red jersey holder Enric Mas.

Following the final ascent to Peñas Blancas, the top five general classification riders finished together, more than five minutes behind the stage winner. Carapaz remains in 4th position, over two minutes behind Felix Gall. Despite the unsuccessful attack, Carapaz expressed optimism regarding the final mountain stage, which features four consecutive ascents.

Carapaz’s career is marked by significant achievements in Grand Tours, including a Giro d'Italia victory in 2019, a second-place finish in the 2020 Vuelta a España, and a third-place finish in the 2021 Tour de France. He also secured the mountain classification in the 2022 Vuelta a España and an Olympic gold medal.
