Richard David Precht criticizes German pension reform debate

During a recent episode of the “Lanz + Precht” podcast, author Richard David Precht criticized the ongoing debate regarding Germany's planned pension reforms, specifically the potential end of retirement at age 63.

Precht dismissed the argument that citizens must work longer due to demographic shifts and increasing life expectancy as a “Milchmädchenrechnung” (a simplistic or flawed calculation). He argued that such reasoning relies on false premises and that policymakers are avoiding necessary structural changes to the pension system by forcing people to work longer.

Precht suggested that technological progress and artificial intelligence will ultimately reduce required work volumes, leading to a future where people work less. He characterized the current push for longer working lives as a way to maintain the existing pension system rather than adapting to technological realities.
