Richard Garriott explores generative AI for future Ultima games
During a panel at DragonCon, legendary RPG creator Richard Garriott discussed the potential role of generative artificial intelligence in the development of the next chapter of the Ultima series. While no official announcement was made, Garriott spent a significant portion of the discussion exploring how AI tools could assist in the creative process.
Visual discussions included possibilities for the game's direction, such as an isometric pixel art style or a three-dimensional perspective similar to Elden Ring. Much of the visual support provided during the panel consisted of landscapes and interfaces generated via ChatGPT.
Garriott also shared a personal success story regarding the use of AI to create an original fantasy language, a project he had struggled to complete for years. He expressed euphoria over using the technology to achieve a lifelong goal, noting that he was more focused on the final result than the traditional creative process. The panel also addressed audience concerns regarding the ethical and environmental implications of using such technology.
