Television presenter Richard Hammond has expressed his gratitude to emergency responders on the 20th anniversary of his high-speed jet car crash.

In 2006, while filming for the BBC motoring program Top Gear at the former RAF Elvington airbase near York, Hammond was driving a jet-powered Vampire dragster at speeds exceeding 300mph. A front tyre failure caused the vehicle to crash. Hammond described the moment in an Instagram post, noting that he felt he was about to die after the vehicle came to an abrupt stop upside down in a field.

Hammond credited his survival to the Air Ambulance and medical aftercare teams who rescued him from the wreckage and provided hospital treatment. He stated he would not be alive to enjoy his career or his family if not for the work of the responders involved in the incident.
