Richard ‘Levelord’ Gray, legendary FPS level designer, dies at 68
Richard Gray, the influential first-person shooter level designer known by the pseudonym ‘Levelord’, has passed away at the age of 68. His death was confirmed by Apogee Entertainment, which paid tribute to his lasting legacy in the gaming industry.
Gray was a prominent figure during the shooter era of the 1990s and early 2000s. He gained significant recognition for his work on Duke Nukem 3D, where he famously included an Easter egg with the message ‘You’re not supposed to be here’ in an area accessible only via cheats. His career included contributions to several iconic titles, such as Quake, Sin, Star Trek: Elite Force 2, and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.
Describing himself as a ‘late bloomer,’ Gray began creating Doom levels in his mid-30s after being noticed in the modding community. Following his time at 3D Realms, he co-founded Hipnotic Interactive, which later became Ritual Entertainment. Colleagues and industry veterans, including John Romero and Scott Miller, have honored his creativity, technical skill, and mentorship within the development community.
