Richard Linklater faces funding challenges for new Transcendentalist trilogy

Filmmaker Richard Linklater has revealed that his long-gestating project about the Transcendentalist movement has expanded into a trilogy. Despite being in development for nearly 20 years, the director reports that securing adequate financing has become a significant challenge.

The project is described as a 19th-century ‘hangout movie’ set in the 1830s and 1840s, exploring the roots of feminism, environmentalism, and abolitionism. The narrative focuses on seminal thinkers including Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau.

Cast members previously attached to the project include Ethan Hawke, Natalie Portman, and Oscar Isaac. While Linklater expressed optimism in 2025 regarding the project’s progress, recent updates indicate that funding remains a primary hurdle for the ambitious multi-film endeavor.
