Richard Linklater updates on 20-year film project

Director Richard Linklater has provided an update on his long-term cinematic project, ‘Merrily We Roll Along’, starring Paul Mescal. The production is planned to span 20 years, consisting of nine sections filmed over two decades.

During an interview at the Zurich Film Festival, Linklater noted that filming for the Stephen Sondheim musical began in 2019 and the fourth section is scheduled to be filmed in a few months. He estimated the project would conclude around 2040. This timeline exceeds the 12-year production period of his previous film, ‘Boyhood’. Linklater remarked that unlike ‘Boyhood’, which was filmed with anonymity, the public nature of this musical adaptation requires regular updates throughout its lengthy production.
