Richard Marine urges healthy habits and early checkups to prevent cancer

Dr. Richard Marine, a specialist in Sports Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, has urged the public to adopt healthy habits and undergo regular medical checkups to prevent cancer and reduce complications. Marine, who serves as the president of NUMED and an advisor to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), warned that many individuals wait for symptoms to appear before seeking medical attention.

Key modifiable risk factors identified include smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight, and obesity. Marine explained that excessive body fat promotes inflammatory processes that can contribute to chronic diseases. To mitigate these risks, he recommended maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding tobacco.

Additionally, the specialist emphasized the importance of daily physical activity, specifically strength training two to three times per week. Such exercise helps preserve muscle mass and improves the body's ability to handle treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He also noted that spending time in nature and walking in green spaces can reduce stress and improve physical well-being.
