All Blacks recall Richie Mo’unga for South Africa tour

Richie Mo’unga has been recalled to the All Blacks squad for the “Greatest Rivalry” tour in South Africa. The 32-year-old fly-half, who has not represented New Zealand since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, joins the team as an injury replacement for center Billy Proctor, who suffered a fractured shoulder.

Mo’unga’s return follows a period in Japan and a recent stint in the National Provincial Championship, which helped him regain eligibility under New Zealand Rugby’s rules. His inclusion adds depth to a playmaker group that includes Ruben Love, Beauden Barrett, Damian McKenzie, and Josh Jacomb. Head coach Dave Rennie noted that the situation may prompt a review of eligibility policies regarding overseas-based players.

The tour, featuring matchups between the All Blacks and the Springboks, is part of a commercial strategy to revive traditional touring formats, including a final Test match in the United States. This series operates independently of the standard Rugby Championship, prioritizing high-yield matchups for both nations.
