Richmond officer wounded in shooting during welfare check

A Richmond police officer was released from the hospital on Friday after being wounded during a mental health welfare check on Thursday evening. Officer Justin Church was shot while assisting a Contra Costa County behavioral health crisis response team in the 2200 block of Key Boulevard.

According to the Richmond Police Department, the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jasmine Robinson, barricaded herself inside a residence and fired numerous rounds indiscriminately. The gunfire struck a patrol vehicle and neighboring homes. Police Chief Tim Simmons noted that the incident could have resulted in more casualties given the volume of rounds fired.

SWAT teams and crisis negotiators were deployed to the scene. The suspect surrendered to authorities around 8:45 p.m. after an hours-long standoff. Residents in the area were instructed to shelter in place until approximately 9 p.m. No other residents or personnel were injured during the incident.
