Ricin Poisoning Probe Expands in Campobasso Province, Italy

In December 2025, Antonella Di Ielsi, 50, and her 15‑year‑old daughter Sara Di Vita were found dead from ricin poisoning in Pietracatella, a town in the province of Campobasso. Six months after the deaths, investigators have conducted 160 recorded statements, repeatedly questioning close relatives and acquaintances to trace the source of the toxin. No suspects have been formally identified, and both the husband Gianni Di Vita and the surviving daughter Alice tested negative for ricin.

Prosecutors have seized electronic devices from family members, examined online forums for instructions on administering ricine, and are focusing on two possible moments of exposure – the evening of 23 December, when only the two victims were present, and the following day when many relatives gathered. A new forensic report, due 30 June, will be prepared by the director of the Pavia Antivenom Centre, aiming to clarify how the toxin was administered. Parallel to the statement‑taking, authorities are reviewing digital communications and other evidence to reconstruct the victims’ personal and family relationships. The investigation remains open and under active judicial scrutiny.
