Rick Macci says Emma Raducanu’s post‑US Open split with Andrew Richardson made no sense

Former United States coach Rick Macci, who once worked with Serena and Venus Williams, publicly criticised British tennis player Emma Raducanu’s decision to end her partnership with coach Andrew Richardson shortly after her 2021 US Open victory. Raducanu won the Grand Slam at 18 years old, entering the tournament ranked No. 150 and becoming the first qualifier in the Open Era to claim a major title.

Macci argued the separation “made no sense” and suggested that the sudden fame, agents and parental influence may have driven the choice. He also faulted the subsequent lack of stability in Raducanu’s team, noting she has worked with five permanent coaches and several short‑term collaborators. In a later update, the player reportedly re‑united with Richardson in May 2026, but Macci maintained that the original split was poorly judged.
