Ricky Gervais’ ‘Alley Cats’ hits Netflix top charts despite critical backlash

Ricky Gervais’ new adult animated series, ‘Alley Cats’, has debuted on Netflix to a polarized reception. While the show has faced heavy criticism from reviewers—earning a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes—it has found significant success with audiences, reaching the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched charts.

Critics have described the series, which follows a group of foul-mouthed stray cats in London, as “smug” and “crude.” Gervais has responded to the backlash on social media, telling viewers that if they are offended, they should remember “it’s just a cartoon about cats” and that they are adults.

Despite the negative reviews, comedy legend John Cleese offered public support, describing the animation as “quite wonderful.” Other actors, including James Dreyfus, have also defended the series. The show features a voice ensemble including Gervais as Gus, Kerry Godliman, Diane Morgan, and David Earl.
