Ridley Scott calls himself an influencer rather than a filmmaker

Director Ridley Scott has described himself as an ‘influencer’ rather than a filmmaker, stating in an interview with The Times of London that he often stays ‘ahead of the game’. Scott suggested that his ability to anticipate trends and avoid repetitive storytelling defines his role in the industry.

Scott also criticized current Hollywood trends, noting a perceived lack of variety in modern narratives, which often focus on superheroes or FBI agents. He expressed interest in exploring new genres, including Westerns and musicals, and confirmed he has cast Hugh Jackman for an upcoming adaptation of ‘Treasure Island’.

His latest project, ‘The Dog Stars’, a post-apocalyptic science fiction film based on the novel by Peter Heller, is scheduled for theatrical release in late August 2026. The film stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, and Josh Brolin. Additionally, Scott is set to receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.

In a separate reflection on his personal life, the 88-year-old director discussed maintaining ‘absolute communication’ with his children despite his demanding career and shared insights into his upbringing as a ‘Blitz baby’ during the Second World War.
