Rie Luciana Nagasako, Pan-American canoeing champion, dies in Rio accident

Pan-American outrigger canoeing champion Rie Luciana Nagasako has died following a maritime accident in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. The athlete, aged 47 or 48, was involved in an incident near the Quebra-Mar during a morning session on Thursday.

Reports indicate the accident occurred while Nagasako was instructing students. While attempting to guide her group to safer waters due to rough sea conditions, she lost her balance and fell into the water. Witnesses suggested the double canoe lost its rudder before breaking, and the athlete was subsequently swept away by strong currents.

Following a rescue operation by the Fire Department, Nagasako was airlifted to the Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto in a critical condition. The hospital later confirmed her death.

Nagasako was a prominent figure in the Va’a community, having won two gold medals at the Pan-American Championship in Easter Island in 2025 and a bronze medal in a sprint event at the World Championship. She was also an instructor and founder of the Barra Va’a club and the Somar Project, which focused on sports accessibility and activities for people with disabilities.
