Riesi hosts historical event on Sicilian deportees in Nazi camps
The I.I.S.S. ‘Carlo Maria Carafa’ auditorium in Riesi hosted a day of study and testimony dedicated to Sicilian internees and deportees in Nazi concentration camps. Organized as part of the ‘Book Meet School’ initiative, the event was a collaborative effort between the local municipality, the school, the ANPI (Gaetano Butera section), and ANED (National Association of Former Deportees).
The event featured the presentation of two significant historical works. Giuseppe Giancarlo Calascibetta presented ‘Oltre il filo spinato: storie di internati di Riesi e Mazzarino’, which reconstructs the experiences of local internees, including those awarded the Medal of Honor from the President of the Republic. Guido Lorenzetti presented ‘Altri siciliani testimoni di libertà’, focusing on the testimonies of Sicilian freedom fighters.
Local officials, including Mayor Salvatore Sardella and Vice Mayor Daniela Pasqualetto, emphasized the importance of historical memory in fostering active citizenship among youth. The session included discussions between students and authors regarding the human stories and moral resistance against Nazi-fascism.
