Rififi TV series inspired by 1992 Greek bank heist and real tragedy

The Greek television series ‘Rififi’, directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias, is drawing significant attention for its roots in real-life events. The show is inspired by the largest unsolved bank robbery in Greek history, which occurred in December 1992 at the Bank of Labor. During that incident, perpetrators tunneled 23–25 meters from a nearby manhole to access bank vaults, emptying hundreds of safety deposit boxes.

Beyond the heist, the character of Olga, portrayed by Evangelia Moumouri, is based on a real family tragedy from Lesvos. The character’s struggle reflects the story of Panagiotis Vasilellis, a child diagnosed with a fourth-stage neuroblastoma in 1999. Despite a massive national fundraising effort to fund his treatment abroad, the family faced bureaucratic obstacles and delays, and the child passed away before he could receive the specialized care he needed.

The series blends these two distinct historical threads—the 1992 heist and the personal tragedy of the Vasilellis family—to explore themes of loss, injustice, and survival against a rigid systemic backdrop.
