Riga Central Station southern expansion reaches major construction milestone

The construction consortium BeReRix has completed all major works on the southern part of the new Riga Central Station building, including the adjacent square and passenger platforms. This development is part of the Rail Baltica project. The completion certificate for these essential works was issued by the supervising FIDIC engineer to both BeReRix and the client, Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas (EDzL).

Completed tasks include facade and roof glazing, the installation of most decorative and functional elements, and the construction and landscaping of passenger platforms and the public square. While the building has achieved its intended architectural form, minor finishing and landscaping works will continue through the end of the year before being handed over to EDzL.

Regarding operations, trains using the existing 1520 mm gauge are expected to begin running through the southern part of the station by mid-2028. The new section features three platforms designed for double occupancy, allowing two trains to dock at a single platform edge simultaneously to increase capacity. The layout includes six tracks: five for passenger service and one transit track for freight or through-traffic. The northern part of the existing station will remain functional for the time being.
