Riga East Clinical University Hospital board appointment sparks controversy

Andris Kulbergs, leader of the United List, has expressed shock regarding the appointment of Vinetas Kutkēviča to the board of the Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS). Kulbergs raised concerns because Kutkēviča previously served on the board of 'Rīgas siltums', where she faced public allegations regarding potential conflicts of interest.

The Ministry of Health has responded to these concerns, stating that the selection process for the two vacancies involved 19 applicants and was conducted in three stages. The Ministry, working with the State Chancellery and an external recruitment firm, denied claims of political influence. They noted that candidates were evaluated by independent specialists from the Latvian Medical Association and the Latvian Association of Young Doctors.

According to the Ministry, because there were no proven violations of law against Kutkēviča, the previous public allegations were not considered grounds for disqualification. Kutkēviča has denied any claims regarding her professional suitability, asserting that she meets all requirements for the position. The controversy has reignited debates concerning the criteria used for selecting leadership and board members for state-owned enterprises.
