Riga: Indian national detained after drunk driving crash
An Indian citizen without a valid residence permit in Latvia caused a significant traffic accident in Riga after driving under the influence. The driver, operating a Mercedes-Benz CLS 320, crashed into a Circle K gas station near the Jorģis Zemitāns Bridge, knocking down a flagpole and road signs while damaging local infrastructure.
Following the crash, an individual at the scene initially claimed to be a passenger and stated the driver had fled. However, police located and detained the suspected driver nearby. Testing revealed a blood alcohol level of 2.11 per mille. The Latvian State Police have initiated criminal proceedings for drunk driving and an administrative process regarding the accident. The individual will be handed over to the State Border Guard for further procedural actions due to their lack of legal residency.
