Riga police collision involving trolleybus triggers criminal investigation

A criminal process has been initiated following a serious multi-vehicle collision in central Riga at the intersection of Bruņinieku and Avotu streets. The accident involved a State Police Volkswagen service vehicle, a Riga Satiksme trolleybus, and two passenger cars, a BMW and a Renault.

Nine people were injured in the crash. While initial reports from the State Police suggested the officers were responding to an 'A' category call regarding minors with sirens and lights activated at a green light, subsequent investigations and video evidence have contradicted this.

Police analysis of technical materials and video recordings revealed that the police crew actually crossed the intersection while the traffic light was red and at excessive speed without ensuring safety. The investigation is ongoing.
