Rightmove updates website wording following MyPorta challenge

Rightmove has removed specific wording from its website meta descriptions after being challenged by property-discovery platform MyPorta. The disputed text included claims of having “over 900,000 properties for sale” and “over 200,000 properties to rent.”

MyPorta founder Mal McCallion stated that these claims were “clearly misleading” and noted that archived records showed the wording had been used since 2010. McCallion suggested that Rightmove’s significant revenue growth may have been supported by traffic from consumers believing the platform offered more market coverage than it actually did.

While Rightmove described the issue as relating to a “small number of historic meta descriptions embedded within our website” that have since been updated, MyPorta has raised further questions regarding the consistency of these changes. The rival platform noted that certain figures allegedly disappeared in April 2025 only to reappear in May, and identified a separate claim regarding over 900,000 new-build properties that remained visible as of late October 2026.
