Rijeka electric bus delivery delayed to December 2026

The delivery of 12 new Higer electric buses for the Croatian city of Rijeka has been postponed to December 20, 2026. KD Autotrolej, the local public transport provider, signed a contract amendment with the supplier Novatec d. o. o. to reflect this new deadline.

The delay is attributed to force majeure circumstances involving international maritime shipping. Specifically, Autotrolej cited a lack of available shipping space from China and disruptions in global shipping routes. The security situation in the Middle East has forced vessels to divert from the Suez Canal to the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing transit times and reducing vessel capacity.

This delay affects more than just Rijeka; a total of 60 electric vehicles destined for Osijek, Šibenik, Sisak, and Zadar are also facing similar postponements from China. The Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure and the Central Agency for Funding and Contracting EU Programs and Projects (SAFU) have both agreed to the extension of the project timeline. Under the new agreement, Autotrolej maintains the right to terminate the contract and claim performance guarantees if Novatec fails to meet the December 2026 deadline.
