Rijeka refinery to host Croatia’s first green hydrogen plant
The Rijeka refinery in Croatia is constructing the country’s first commercial green hydrogen production facility. The investment, exceeding 60 million euros, is being managed by INA and is intended to strengthen Croatia’s position within the European energy landscape.
The facility is expected to produce its first molecules of green hydrogen by early next year. It will utilize clean electricity from a dedicated power plant to achieve an annual capacity of 1,500 tons. While the hydrogen will primarily be used within the refinery, it may also be supplied to the external market.
This project is part of a broader modernization cycle at the refinery, which recently included the construction of a heavy residue processing plant. According to INA’s operational leadership, these upgrades will allow for the processing of a wider spectrum of oil and increase diesel production by up to 30 percent.
Local officials in Kostrena have expressed the need for continued industrial improvements regarding environmental protection. Community leaders emphasized the importance of adhering to high standards for safety, transparency, and the prevention of marine pollution and odors.
