Rijeka Sets Up Daytime Homeless Shelter and Expands Beach Water Quality Testing

The city of Rijeka activated a temporary daytime shelter for people experiencing homelessness as a heat wave with red‑level temperature warnings hit the region on July 30‑31. The facilities on Ruže sv. Franje and OAZA provide shelter, meals, drinks and cooling to protect the most vulnerable residents during the hottest part of the day.

Separately, Rijeka allocated about 51,000 euros to add daily rapid microbiological tests at the Kantrida east and west beaches. Managed by the Primorje‑Gorski Kotar County Public Health Institute from 20 August to 30 September, the program delivers same‑day water‑quality results on the institute’s website, allowing authorities and swimmers to act quickly on any health risk. Mayor Iva Rinčić highlighted the measures as part of the city’s priority to safeguard public health.
