Rijeka volunteers rescue approximately 70 cats from unsanitary apartment

Volunteers from the Kitten Safe House association discovered approximately 70 cats living in extreme conditions within a 47-square-meter apartment in Rijeka, Croatia. The residence was found filled with large piles of trash and bags of feces.

During the initial rescue operation, volunteers located 35 adult cats and 17 kittens, ranging in age from one day to three weeks. The rescue effort involved collaboration with veterinary inspectors, police, the Center for Social Welfare, and various municipal and epidemiological services.

The association is seeking donations for food, litter, and pads, as well as financial support for veterinary costs such as vaccines and tests that may not be covered by the City of Rijeka. While the city has committed to covering sterilization and certain veterinary expenses, the association noted that additional funding is required to manage the scale of the situation.
