Rijkswaterstaat to construct new side channel near Grave

Rijkswaterstaat has finalized the project decision to construct the Geul Coehoorn, a 3.3-kilometer side channel near the Grave weir and lock complex on the Meuse river. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and will last approximately 1.5 years.

The project aims to restore flowing habitats and spawning grounds for fish, such as barbel and lamprey, which have been lost due to the seven weirs that regulate water levels for shipping. The channel will feature a gravel bottom, shallow banks, and marsh zones to support diverse aquatic life. While the intervention will affect local groundwater levels, officials state the impact will be limited.

Appeals against the decision can be lodged with the Council of State until November 17. The exact costs of the project are currently unknown as the tender process has not yet commenced.
