Rijkswaterstaat traffic controllers dispute new software system

Traffic controllers at Rijkswaterstaat are in conflict with management regarding the implementation of Dynac, a new software system used to document highway incidents. Controllers have described the system as “slow, unsafe, and unworkable,” expressing concerns that it could jeopardize highway safety by delaying the response times of Rijkswaterstaat employees and emergency services.

While controllers are satisfied with the system’s ability to operate cameras and route information boards, they claim it is unsuitable for incident documentation. Experts suggest these issues stem from the system being built on fifteen-year-old technology. The rollout is set to begin at the South Netherlands Traffic Control Center in Helmond.

A Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson acknowledged the staff's concerns but disputed the most severe criticisms. The spokesperson stated that software and network improvements have resolved most malfunctions and denied that emergency response times would be affected. Additionally, management denied reports of budget overruns, asserting that the project cost 10 million euros less than the 169 million euro budget.
