Rijnland Energie to build Watergeuzen battery in Zoeterwoude

The residents' cooperative Rijnland Energie has officially greenlit the construction of the Watergeuzen battery near Zoeterwoude. Following a highly successful crowdfunding campaign that raised 1.5 million euros—surpassing the initial 700,000 euro goal—the project has secured the necessary financing and a construction contract.

The battery will have a capacity of 10 MW (20 MWh) and will consist of six units, each roughly the size of half a shipping container. Designed to stabilize the local electricity grid, the system will help manage peak loads and reduce pressure on the network managed by Liander. Once operational, it is estimated the battery could provide power to 23,000 households for two hours.

The project is driven by local ownership, with 465 residents holding a say in the initiative. Funding is provided by local residents, technical partner Emmett Green, and the sustainable investment fund Meewind. Construction is scheduled to begin this autumn.
