Riksbanken signals potential interest rate hikes for Swedish households

The Swedish Riksbank has signaled potential interest rate hikes, warning that a significant rise in inflation could necessitate faster increases than previously forecasted. The central bank's new projections suggest an average policy rate of 2.38 percent by the third quarter of next year, up from the 1.97 percent estimated in June. For households with a mortgage of 3 million SEK, this could result in an annual cost increase of approximately 18,900 SEK before tax deductions.

Riksbank Governor Erik Thedéen has cautioned that the necessity of these hikes depends heavily on future fiscal policy. He noted that if the incoming government implements campaign promises without adequate financing, the resulting inflation would require further rate increases to maintain the 2 percent target.

In addition to rising interest rates, Swedish households face several other cost increases heading into winter. These include the expiration of temporary tax cuts on fuel, which could raise petrol and diesel prices, and rising electricity costs, particularly in southern Sweden. Combined, these factors could increase monthly household expenses by over 3,000 SEK compared to the previous year.
