Riksbanken warns of 3.9 billion kronor in expiring banknotes
Approximately 3.9 billion Swedish kronor in old banknotes are at risk of losing their value. The Riksbank has implemented a time limit for redeeming invalid notes, setting a deadline of June 30, 2027.
This policy affects all banknotes that became invalid in 2017 or earlier, including the red 500-krona note and the green-blue 100-krona note featuring Carl von Linné. Individuals who find such notes are encouraged to submit them to the Riksbank for assessment.
Christina Wejshammar, head of the payments department at the Riksbank, noted that it becomes significantly more difficult to claim compensation after ten years because required documentation, such as bank statements, becomes harder to obtain. Additionally, the Riksbank has increased the fee for submitting these notes for assessment from 200 to 300 kronor.
