Rimavská Sobota Mayor Faces Court Case and Re-election
Jozef Šimko, the current mayor of Rimavská Sobota, is facing a dual challenge involving upcoming municipal elections and a legal proceeding. Šimko is accused of manipulation in public procurement and a public auction, with a court hearing scheduled for November 25, 2026.
Under the principle of presumption of innocence, Šimko remains in office and is eligible to run for the 2026–2030 term. Legal experts note that even if a first-instance court finds him guilty, he could appeal the decision to a regional court, allowing him to continue his duties while the case remains non-final.
In the upcoming municipal elections on October 24, 2026, Šimko is one of four candidates vying for the mayoral seat. His opponents include Attila Halász, Michal Slovák, and Roman Vaľo. Voters will also select 17 members for the city council from a pool of 73 candidates.
