Rimini deploys camera‑trap system to curb waste‑bin violations

The municipality of Rimini in Italy has used photo‑trap cameras near waste‑bin containers to detect illegal disposal. In 2023 the system recorded 162 violations, adding to a total of 536 offenses since its launch in 2021. The cameras operate on a rotating schedule, covering about thirty‑one zones across the city, and are authorised by the Prefecture. Most breaches involve littering outside bins or incorrect sorting, and each infraction carries a €104 fine. The initiative, coordinated with waste‑manager Hera and the volunteer Ecological Guard, aims to improve environmental compliance and urban cleanliness.

The enforcement data shows the highest violation counts at three locations: Via Francesco Frioli (91 offenses), Viale Carlo Matteucci (21) and Via dei Partigiani (19). The municipal office hopes the deterrent effect will foster a cultural shift toward proper waste separation.
