Rimini woman faces trial for allegedly forcing partner to marry foreigner
A 31-year-old woman in Rimini, Italy, is facing trial for allegedly inducing her 21-year-old partner to enter a sham marriage with a foreign national. Prosecutors have requested that the woman be sent to trial for 'induzione al matrimonio' (inducing marriage), a charge under the Italian penal code designed to punish those who coerce others into marriage or civil unions.
According to investigators, the 31-year-old exploited the 21-year-old's psychological vulnerability, as the victim suffers from depressive disorder. The marriage, which took place in May 2025, was allegedly orchestrated to allow the foreign man to obtain residency benefits in Italy. The suspect reportedly acted in concert with an unidentified man and attended the wedding ceremony as a witness to ensure the process was completed successfully.
The investigation by the Carabinieri revealed a broader pattern of abuse and isolation. Authorities claim the victim was systematically distanced from her family and friends, leaving her entirely dependent on her partner. The victim was also reportedly subjected to degrading living conditions, including being forced to sleep on the streets or in makeshift accommodations.
