Rincón de la Vieja volcano increases activity with over 100 eruptions

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano in Costa Rica has experienced a significant surge in activity, recording more than 100 eruptions between July and August. On August 31, the volcano produced its most energetic eruption of the year, discharging volcanic material and hot lahares—flows of mud and rock—down river channels in the northern sector.

In response, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) has issued a green alert for several communities, including Dos Ríos and Aguas Claras in Upala, as well as Mayorga, Cañas Dulces, and Curubandé in Liberia. Authorities have expressed particular concern regarding potential lahares in the Pénjamo, Azul, and Pizote rivers, and the Azufrada stream.

CNE President Alejandro Picado Eduarte stated that preventive measures are in place to protect the population. Residents are advised to stay away from riverbeds to avoid contact with volcanic material and to prevent livestock from drinking the water. Additionally, the CNE has recommended using masks and avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure in the event of ashfall.
