Ring introduces AI features and subscription tiers in Germany

Amazon-owned Ring is expanding its service offerings in Germany with the introduction of the Ring Pro subscription. This tier includes AI-driven features such as video descriptions, which generate text summaries of motion events (e.g., ‘A dog is tearing paper towels on the carpet’), and single event alerts that consolidate multiple motion notifications into one to prevent alert fatigue.

Users can also opt for ‘Pro Intelligence’ functions for 4 euros per month per camera or 24-hour continuous recording for 3 euros per month per camera. Additionally, Ring is implementing a new encryption technology called ‘TAKE’ which utilizes rotating encryption keys to enhance security.

Despite its market presence, Ring faces criticism regarding its subscription-heavy model and hardware performance. Comparative testing indicates that many core features, such as video storage and person/package detection, require paid monthly or annual plans. Furthermore, some tests suggest that Ring’s 2K resolution can appear blurry compared to competitors like Philips Hue and Aqara, and its field of view may be limited in capturing details like packages left on doormats.
