Rio Branco declares 180-day state of emergency due to drought

The city of Rio Branco has declared a 180-day state of emergency due to a severe drought. The decree, signed by Mayor Alysson Bestene, follows a significant reduction in rainfall and the drying up of the Rio Acre, its tributaries, wells, and small reservoirs.

The drought is impacting human water consumption, livestock, and local production, particularly affecting rural communities, family farming, and artisanal fishing. Essential public services, including schools and health units, are also facing challenges.

In response, the Municipal Civil Defense has expanded the distribution of potable water via water trucks. Currently, approximately 300 families in the Vila Manoel Marques region are receiving water on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The emergency status allows the municipal administration to mobilize resources for humanitarian assistance, maintain essential services, and fast-track the procurement of necessary goods and services.
