Rio Branco introduces free HPV DNA molecular testing

The Rio Branco Municipal Health Secretariat has begun offering free HPV DNA molecular testing to women in the public health network. This new diagnostic tool identifies high-risk types of the virus associated with cervical cancer before physical lesions appear on cells.

Currently, the service is available at the Augusto Hidalgo de Lima Primary Care Reference Unit (URAP) and the Cidade do Povo health unit, with plans to expand to other capital units starting in November. The testing targets women aged 25 to 64 who have already begun their sexual lives, prioritizing those who have not had a preventive exam in at least three years.

The technology also allows for self-collection, where patients collect their own vaginal sample following professional guidance, potentially increasing access for those uncomfortable with traditional gynecological procedures. Samples are sent to a reference laboratory in Rio de Janeiro via the Acre State Health Secretariat (Sesacre), with results expected within 35 to 40 days.
