Rio Branco mother and daughter detained after cat thrown from car dies
Security‑camera footage in Rio Branco, Brazil, captured a mother and her daughter throwing a cat from a moving vehicle in the Conjunto Paulo César neighborhood. The animal was struck by the car’s rear wheel and died. Police identified the pair – the daughter works as a receptionist for a contractor of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) and the mother is her parent – and arrested them on charges of animal cruelty and administrative violations by the municipal environment agency (Semeia).
Both suspects were held in the local flagrante police station and faced a custody hearing. On the following day a judge granted them provisional release after they each posted a bail of R$ 1,621 (total R$ 3,242), equivalent to one minimum wage. The case sparked public outrage in Acre’s capital and prompted statements from the MPF and Semeia regarding the investigation and possible employer actions.
