Rio Cello festival holds 32nd edition in Rio de Janeiro

The 32nd edition of Rio Cello, considered Brazil's largest cello festival, is currently taking place in Rio de Janeiro. The event runs from Saturday, August 8, through Sunday, August 16, offering free programming to the public across various urban venues.

Opening performances include a dance tribute to Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes by choreographer Chris Cecconelo, accompanied by cellist Lui Coimbra and violinists Karolin Broosch and Thiago Cosmo. The festival's scheduled locations include the Museu da República, Espaço Cenáculo, Casa Museu Eva Klabin, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária, Praça Pio X, and Sala Cecília Meireles.

Founded by English cellist David Chew, who has resided in Brazil for over 40 years, the festival began as a meeting of cellists and has evolved into a large-scale celebration involving music, dance, and visual arts. Chew stated his goal is to democratize classical music, noting the festival has already reached over 500,000 people.
