Rio Claro launches equotherapy project for mental health

The municipality of Rio Claro has inaugurated a new equotherapy project at the Parque de Exposições to support mental health services. The initiative is a partnership between the local government and the Clube do Cavalo, utilizing contact with horses as a therapeutic tool for patients within the municipal health network.

Participants are selected through a pre-selection process and must undergo evaluation by a multidisciplinary team. The program targets children and adolescents enrolled in the municipal school system who are supported by the Centro de Atendimento Ampliado da Criança e do Adolescente (CAAIA) or the Núcleo de Educação Especial. Adults will be selected from patients at the outpatient clinic and the Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS).

The therapy aims to stimulate physical, emotional, cognitive, and social aspects. Expected benefits include improved motor coordination, balance, and posture, as well as increased concentration and the reduction of stress, anxiety, and fear. The program also seeks to strengthen self-esteem, socialization, and autonomy among participants.
