Rio das Ostras advances rural development and fish farming initiatives

Rio das Ostras is advancing initiatives to support rural and fishing sectors through new governance and economic diversification. The Municipal Secretariat of Fishing and Agriculture has announced the electoral process for the Municipal Council for Sustainable Rural Development and Fishing (CMDRSP) for the 2027-2028 biennium. The election will take place during the 6th Municipal Conference for Sustainable Rural Development and Fishing, with 12 seats available, eight of which are reserved for organized civil society institutions based in the municipality.

Simultaneously, technical teams from the Municipal Secretariat and the Rio de Janeiro State Fisheries Institute (Fiperj) are conducting field assessments to evaluate the viability of fish farming (pisciculture) as a new income source for local rural producers. The technical visits focus on identifying properties with suitable water availability, space, and infrastructure to host fish tanks, aiming to diversify rural production in the region.
