Brazil launches health campaigns for National Day to Combat Smoking
In observance of National Day to Combat Smoking on August 29, various health initiatives are being launched across Brazil. The National Cancer Institute (Inca) has launched a campaign titled “Physical activity and health: training does not go with smoking,” emphasizing that exercise cannot negate the physiological damage caused by tobacco and nicotine. Experts warn that smokers, including those using electronic cigarettes (vapes), often mistakenly believe physical training mitigates health risks, whereas smoking actually impairs cardiovascular, respiratory, and muscular functions.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Health Secretariat is conducting a series of community actions. These include health services at Terminal Gentileza, such as vaccinations, auriculotherapy, and guidance on sexually transmitted infections. Other regional activities include workshops, physical exercises, and the promotion of the Smoking Control Program (PCT) in various neighborhoods like Tijuca, Madureira, and Campo Grande.
Additionally, the municipality of Itaboraí is highlighting its free smoking cessation program through the Unified Health System (SUS), which provides professional monitoring and medication when clinically indicated to assist patients in overcoming nicotine dependence.
