Rio de Janeiro announces new pediatric healthcare super center
The Rio de Janeiro administration has announced the creation of the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde da Criança e do Adolescente (SCCA), a specialized healthcare complex for patients aged 0 to 18. Scheduled for completion in the second half of 2027, the center will be located in the current Hospital Municipal da Piedade in the North Zone.
The facility will offer 13 pediatric specialties, including neuropediatrics, cardiology, psychiatry, and ophthalmology. It is expected to handle approximately 16,700 monthly consultations and will feature specialized services for type 1 diabetes, childhood obesity, and infant-pubertal gynecology. The center will also include a humanized ICU with 20 beds for children with chronic conditions.
To support the new center, the Hospital Municipal Jesus in Vila Isabel will undergo expansions to manage high-complexity cases, including 20 acute care ICU beds. The project involves a R$ 75 million investment through a partnership with the Rio de Janeiro City Council. The initiative aims to hire over 200 medical specialists and employ approximately 800 health professionals in total.
