Rio de Janeiro approves animal friendly condominium certification bill

The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) has approved a bill that would establish the ‘Animal Friendly Condominium Seal’ (Selo Condomínio Amigo dos Animais). The legislation, which now moves to the State Government for sanction or veto, aims to recognize residential complexes that implement measures for animal protection and well-being.

To qualify for the certification, condominiums must include animal welfare and protection measures in their internal regulations. Requirements include providing designated common areas for pet recreation, such as signaled parks or gardens, maintaining hygiene in shared spaces, and offering educational information to residents regarding basic animal care. The bill also encourages animal adoption through partnerships with protection organizations. The seal is valid for one year and is renewable upon proof of continued compliance.
