Rio de Janeiro Art Deco icon Edifício A Noite undergoes retrofit

The Edifício A Noite, an Art Deco landmark in Rio de Janeiro, is being transformed into a residential complex through a retrofit project. Designed by Joseph Gire and inaugurated in 1929, the building was the first reinforced concrete skyscraper in Latin America.

The renovation, led by Azo, will convert the structure into a residential space featuring 447 apartments, three shops, a restaurant on the 23rd floor, and a public lookout point. The project aims to preserve historical architectural elements, such as the stepped facades and the stylized ironwork of the helical staircase.

This transformation is supported by the city's Reviver Centro program, established in 2021, which incentivizes the conversion of commercial buildings into residential ones through tax exemptions. The project was recognized with the Ademi 2025 Award in the Retrofit category.
