Rio de Janeiro Assembly votes on elderly protection patrol program
The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) is voting on Bill 1.764/23, which proposes the creation of the Elderly Person Patrol Program. The initiative aims to protect seniors who have judicial protective measures in place.
Under the proposal, Military Police teams would conduct weekly visits to these individuals. The program would be coordinated by the Secretariat of Youth and Healthy Aging (SEIJES) in integration with the Civil Police, the Court of Justice, the Public Ministry, and the Public Defender's Office.
During these visits, officers would verify if aggressors are complying with judicial orders. The project also allows for municipal guards to participate following specific training and includes provisions for awareness campaigns and prevention courses to combat violence against the elderly.
