Rio de Janeiro authorities crack down on illegal scrapyard and energy theft

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro state have conducted separate operations targeting illegal activities in the region. In Santíssimo, Detran-RJ agents shuttered an unauthorized auto parts shop operating as a clandestine scrapyard. During the inspection, officials discovered vehicle components, including glass from stolen Fiat Mobi cars, and noted a lack of proper registration or invoices. Investigators are looking into whether the site was used for vehicle dismantling related to insurance fraud. The owner was taken to a police station on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.

In Niterói, Enel Rio technicians and civil police identified and removed illegal electricity connections at two kiosks in the Pendotiba neighborhood. The owners of the establishments were arrested in flagrante for energy theft. Officials noted that such irregularities compromise service quality and public safety, while also potentially increasing costs for legitimate consumers.
