Rio de Janeiro authorities pursue murder trial and environmental fraud investigation

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have initiated significant legal and investigative actions targeting organized crime and administrative corruption.

A Rio de Janeiro court has ordered that gambling figure Rogério de Andrade face a jury trial for allegedly ordering the 2020 murder of Fernando de Miranda Iggnacio. The crime, reportedly motivated by a dispute over gambling control, occurred in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Gilmar Eneas Lisboa also faces trial for monitoring the victim. Both men remain in preventive detention.

Separately, the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office (MPRJ) launched ‘Operation Hidra de Lerna’ to investigate suspected irregularities in the issuance of environmental licenses within the State Environmental Institute (INEA) and the State Environmental Control Commission (CECA). As a result, the president of CECA, Maurício Couto Cesar Junior, has been removed from his position and barred from contacting agency staff. The operation resulted in the seizure of electronics, luxury items, and cash, as well as the arrest of an INEA representative for illegal firearm possession.
