Rio de Janeiro begins major restoration of Metropolitan Cathedral

The Rio de Janeiro State Government has launched the first major restoration project for the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian in the city center in 50 years. Executed by the State Public Works Company (EMOP-RJ), the R$ 72.1 million intervention is funded by the State Sovereign Fund (Funserj).

The initial phase focuses on the bell tower, involving the restoration and tuning of six bells weighing between 300 kilograms and 3.5 tons. The electrical system is also being upgraded to allow for automatic bell operation. Additionally, the project includes deep cleaning and restoration of the concrete facade and meticulous care for the cathedral's four large stained-glass sets, which consist of over 2,000 imported glass pieces each.

Coinciding with these works, a new official van boarding point for tourists visiting Christ the Redeemer has been established at the Cathedral, located on Avenida República do Chile. Operated by the Paineiras concessionaire, the service runs daily from 7:00 to 16:00 to accommodate visitors staying in the downtown area.
